ASK Group Consulting and Workshops in Virginia

Virginia divisions working with ASK Group include Fairfax County Public Schools, Frederick County Public Schools, Henry County Schools, Louisa County Public Schools, Prince William County Schools, Spotsylvania Public Schools, and Winchester Public Schools. In Fairfax County Public Schools, Certified Local Trainers (CLTs) lead the six-day workshop series Leading the Learning for administrators committed to increasing their expertise as instructional leaders. The multifaceted work in Prince William County includes professional development opportunities for administrators and teachers as well as support for the revision of the supervision and evaluation process for teachers and administrators. District office administrators and school-based administrators from eighty-five schools have participated in the six-day Leading the Learning workshop series and completed walk-throughs with the workshop leader. Each year four days of professional development based on Why Didn’t I Learn This is College? is provided for approximately 500 novice teachers; this training is led by 30 Certified Local Trainers (CLTs) who participated in nine days of CLT training. Paula Rutherford and Bruce Oliver are working with these Virginia school divisions.

New Teacher Professional Development Kit

The New Teacher Professional Development Kit provides the tools you need to design and implement a comprehensive new teacher professional developmentprogram for your school or district. Mentoring in the 21st Century® Institute

Another option is to have an ASK Group consultant lead a two-day Mentoring in the 21st Century® Institute on-site. You can use the additional Learning Experiences in the resource kit for follow up workshop sessions.

  • What do we need to know and be able to do to help new teachers meet district performance standards?

Resources

  • The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook by Paula Rutherford addresses the areas of focus listed above and provides tools for needs assessments, goal setting, reflection, and instructional design. There are pointers about best practice in a standards-based classroom including what to note, suggestions to make, and reflective questions to ask. Also included is a wide array of intervention strategies for the challenges and concerns faced by new teachers. This text provides guidelines for using Why Didn't I Learn This in College? with new teachers.
  • Why Didn't I Learn This in College? by Paula Rutherford. This best seller pulls together everything a new teacher needs to know in one source. It is based on the constructs that the best management program is a good instructional program and that if student learning is our goal, we want to shift our focus from control and compliance to creating positive and productive learning-centered environments.
