Mentoring in the 21st Century® Resource Kit
Many ISDs use Mentoring in the 21st Century® Resource Kit to meet their mentoring professional development needs. This kit provides a complete mentoring curriculum that districts can use to easily design and implement a comprehensive mentoring program. It includes teaching notes, learning exercises, handouts, and DVDs for workshop sessions. Outlines for over 30 hours of mentor training are provided. The price of the kit is $985.
New Teacher Professional Development Kit
The New Teacher Professional Development Kit provides Texas ISDs the tools they need to design and implement a comprehensive new teacher induction program in conjunction with their mentoring program. You can use this kit, complete with teaching notes, learning exercises, DVDs, and handouts for workshop sessions, to design your own half-day, full-day, or multiple-day workshops, and follow-up sessions to initial training. The price of the kit is $795.
On-Site Mentoring in the 21st Century® Institutes
Another option is to have an ASK Group consultant lead a two or three day Mentoring in the 21st Century® Institute on-site. Our consultants can work with you to plan how to build in-house capacity, lead your own mentoring institutes, and design follow-up sessions. ISDs that have offered on-site mentoring institutes include Alvin, Beeville, Edgewood, Klein, Manor, Northwest, Pearland, San Antonio, and Ysleta.
Institute Areas of Focus:
- What do we need to know and be able to do to help new teachers meet district performance standards?
- What are the conditions we need to create in order to promote retention of new teachers?
- How can we use Just ASK resources to support our mentoring program?
Books
The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook by Paula Rutherford includes a mentoring calendar and tools for needs assessments, goal setting, reflection, and instructional design. There are pointers about best practice in a standards-based classroom including what to note, suggestions to make, and reflective questions to ask. Also included is a wide array of intervention strategies for the challenges and concerns faced by new teachers. This text provides guidelines for using Why Didn't I Learn This in College? with new teachers. Put one in the hands of each of your mentors.
Why Didn't I Learn This in College? by Paula Rutherford is a bestseller that pulls together everything a new teacher needs to know in one source. It is based on the constructs that the best management program is a good instructional program and that if student learning is our goal, we want to shift our focus from control and compliance to creating positive and productive learning-centered environments. Provide a copy of this text for each of your mentors and each of your new teachers.
Instruction for All Students by Paula Rutherford reflects current research about best practice in teaching and learning in the 21st century. The book includes resources that support teachers in their effort to be more skillful at planning in a standards-based environment and providing rigorous learning experiences for students. This is the perfect book for new teachers and experienced teachers new to the district.
Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners by Paula Rutherford is a wonderful resource for all teachers. This text is designed to build skillfulness in recognizing, respecting, and responding to the needs of the wide range of students in today’s classrooms. It provides strategies for use with second language learners, gifted students, at-risk learners, students with special needs, and other students across the learning spectrum.
Our Work in Texas
"Ysleta ISD totally revised our New Teacher Induction program 2 years ago, and after careful review we chose the Mentoring in the 21st Century® Resource Kit as the basis of our entire program. We provide each of our mentors with the book The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook, and each new teacher with Why Didn't I Learn This in College? We feel there is no better 'bang for your buck' that the resources provided by Just ASK Publications."
Betsy Geery, Former Director of Professional Development
